What the Ant Knows About Getting Ready Before the Rush

Proverbs 6:6-8 tells business owners to go study an insect: "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest." Nobody supervises the ant. Nobody sends her a reminder email. She just knows that winter is coming, and she acts while there's still time to act comfortably instead of frantically.

Every November, I watch small business owners do the opposite. They know December is coming. They know tax season follows right behind it. And they wait anyway — not because they don't care, but because "catching up on the books" feels like a big, vague, dreadful task with no clear starting line. So it gets pushed to "after the holidays," which becomes January, which becomes the week before taxes are due, which becomes a scramble that costs more — in stress, in time, and often in actual dollars — than it ever needed to.

The ant doesn't have a system that's more impressive than yours. She just doesn't wait for the pressure of winter to force her hand. That's the whole lesson, and it applies directly to your books: the best time to clean them up is before you're cold and out of options, not after.

What "getting ready" actually looks like:

If your books have fallen behind this year — a few months of uncategorized transactions, some unreconciled accounts, receipts you've been meaning to log — November is the window. Not because there's anything magic about the month, but because it's the last stretch before the holidays shrink everyone's available time and the last real runway before tax season tightens the pressure.

Concretely, a clean-up before year-end means:

  • Every transaction categorized, not sitting in a catch-all bucket

  • Every account reconciled against its actual bank and credit card statements

  • Duplicate charges and missing receipts flagged while they're still easy to trace

  • A real profit & loss statement you can actually trust

Verse to sit with:
"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest." — Proverbs 6:6-8

You don't need a guide standing over you to know winter's coming. You already know. The only question is whether you act like the ant now, or scramble like the sluggard in April.

I'm opening a limited number of spots this month to help with exactly this. My November Book Clean-Up Special covers up to 100 transactions — categorized, reconciled, and handed back to you with a clean P&L, so you walk into December already caught up. See the Clean-Up Special →
